“My love of music goes back to my youngest years when I used to sit glued to Saturday night variety shows on TV. Every song I heard told a story and the creative streak began there.
Throughout my life I have believed every child should be given the opportunity to experience music and to access it at the most desired level. Social and Financial difficulties should never be a bar to this.
The idea to form a local music group came as a result of my own abilities in songwriting and composition, and I was also fortunate enough to experience performance from behind the scenes when a close friend became a professional singer at just sixteen."
Born and brought up in Dyce, Debbie began her community work when she was twelve, volunteering her time with the youngest residents of Woodlands Hospital on Sunday afternoons. A long-time member of an Aberdeen based service which introduced volunteers to families with children with disabilities, Debbie realised there was a need to ensure young people were encouraged in the arts with no discrimination. Following a career in office administration, then starting a family, Debbie rediscovered her affinity with the “additional needs” sector by gaining employment as a one-to-one supporter for adults with learning difficulties. In 2003 she fulfilled an ambition by setting up a community music group.
Debbie gave up work and concentrated on developing the organisation full time with her musical ability setting the goals for future success. In 2004 Debbie composed a piece of work entitled 'Song for Tomorrow' which raised £5000 for Children's Charities and has since gone to create many more including the patriotic ‘Our Aberdeen'. The music group became a charity in 2005.
In 2007 Debbie founded Kimamo Music, the trading name under which Debbie's music and products are registered. Branded products include Happy Feet Dance, Rhythm and Musicality workshops and Bonne Accordia.
Debbie is married to Harry and mum to Rebecca and Lucy. The family pet, Border Collie Benji, ensures her day begins with relative calm during their morning walks.
