OUR ABERDEEN
First penned 18 years ago by our Founder & Creative Director, Debra Baxter, Our Aberdeen was created to give young people a voice and a platform to be heard through music. Today, we are delighted to see this anthem continuing its journey across the city and being embraced by a new generation.
Through collaborations with partners across the city, including Aberdeen Archives, Gallery & Museums, Our Aberdeen has recently featured as part of Cowdray Hall’s Centenary Celebrations, the Aberdeen Kiltwalk and the Big Sing, where thousands of P4 pupils from schools across Aberdeen came together to perform the song.
For Music 4 U, this captures the very heart of our mission: empowering young voices and creating opportunities for young people to grow in confidence, creativity and joy through music. Seeing the song pass from the charity into the wider community and continue to connect young people across the city means so much to all of us at Music 4 U.
It’s incredibly special to watch the next generation of young people singing Our Aberdeen and to think about how music will continue to shape their lives for years to come. One particularly memorable moment during the Big Sing was reconnecting with Jacqueline, a Music 4 U alumni who is now a P4 teacher herself. She remembered singing Our Aberdeen all those years ago and was now watching the young people she teaches experience that same sense of confidence, pride and connection through music.
With lyrics that echo the city’s Fairer Future ambitions, Our Aberdeen continues to be a timeless anthem of hope and pride for the city.
